- The first thing you should think about when noticing a leak or burst pipe, you should refer to a shut off valve or main shut off valve to turn the water off and temporarily stop flooding. All plumbing fixtures should have a valve below them controlling the water supply to the fixture. The main shut off valve (shuts off water to the whole house) is usually located in the basement coming from a slab or a foundation wall. It is also usually found on the front wall of the house closest to the street. It is often a good idea to check and see if the shut off valves in your house are functioning well to prevent from future dilemmas.
